Available Programs

Solar Observing Students will learn about the Sun, how it works, sunspots, flares, prominences, safe viewing techniques, and age specific projects for observing the Sun.  This is followed, weather permitting, by solar viewing projects through safe solar telescopes.
The
Night Sky
Students will learn about the current night sky.  Where and how to view the planets and constellations that are visible, plus any upcoming special events.  They will also learn about telescopes and binoculars.  This is followed by telescope viewing of the Sun if daytime or stars and planets if an evening program.

  About our Presenter: Stephen Meeks
Mr. Meeks is a dynamic speaker who has a passion for science and teaching.  He presents the material in a fun, enthusiastic way that catches student's attention and tries to evoke that same sense of awe and wonder in them. It is his goal not to teach about the subject, but how to do and participate.  He doesn't teach about the planets, but how and when to view them.   He is also actively involved in the subject he teaches.  It is not uncommon to find Mr. Meeks out under the stars on clear nights.  Mr. Meeks has been presenting public programs since the early 1990's.  He's served six years as an adjunct astronomy college professor and has been an active member of the Northeast Florida Astronomical Society since 1990.

Why does he do it?
Public presentations is a side "job" he does outside of his full-time job responsibilities because he loves to share his passion of the natural sciences with others.
